19TH CENTURY CHINESE IVORY FIGURAL GROUP SIGNED
This is a very rare and fine 19th century Chinese ivory figural group. The Daoist Immortal 'Magu' who represents longevity and two boy attendants standing on a fenced terrace were finely carved. The countenances of the figures are serene and cheerful. The details of the clothes and wood grains of the ivory simulated 'wooden' planks were skilfully carved. The figures and the fences are made of solid ivory while the terrace is made of wood covered with ivory pieces inlaid with mother of pearl droplets. It was signed 'Zhong Li', made by family Li. Dating: 2nd half of the 19th century; Height: 10.25 inches; width: 6.8 inches; depth: 5 inches; Condition: good condition, one missing narrow side plank on top of the terrace as shown in enlargement 11, one missing piece under the top layer of the terrace, loss of some small mother of pearl droplet inlays, one ivory 'plank' on the bottom curled due to great age as shown in enlargement 10, one boy with missing drumstick.
