IMPERIAL JIAQING M/P SNOWY LANDSCAPE BOWL EX CHRISTIES
This is an extremely rare and fine imperial Jiaqing mark and period (AD 1796 - 1820) famille rose porcelain bowl. It was finely decorated on the outside with a snowy mountain landscape scene of the Xihu, the West Lake in Hangzhou, China, one of the Xihu shijing, ten landscape scenes of the West Lake, most probably by a court painter. In his book, the authentication of Ming and Qing porcelains, Geng Baochang noted that these bowls decorated with the ten landscape scenes of the West Lake in famille rose were made to court order in sets of twelve during the Jiaqing period. The decoration on this bowl is so fine that it looks like an ink and colour landscape painting with all the details, such as the figures, animals and trees well presented. The inside was further decorated with lappet borders and pine and finger citron patterns in iron red. The four characters, Gengling jixue, the snow accumulated on Mount Geng, were inscribed on one side. The bottom was marked with the six character Jiaqing seal mark in iron red and is of the period. Dating: Jiaqing mark and period (AD 1796 - 1820); Diameter of mouth: 6 inches; height: 2.75 inches; diameter of foot: 2.1 inches; Original condition report at the auction (no further damages and restorations after the auction): Restored hairline rim cracks: approx. 6 cm and 3.5 cm long. Two further areas of restoration to the sides of the bowl, around the four character inscription. Small restored glaze flake on rim, approx. 1/2 cm long. (The restoration is so good that the damages and restorations are not noticeable as shown in the enlargements.) Provenance: sold at Christie's London, old English collection.
