FINE AND RARE MING DYNASTY WHITE JADE BIXIE
This is a fine and rare Ming dynasty white jade bixie. Bixie are carvings of mythical beasts which were used as tomb guards in ancient China. This bixie was finely carved and looks attractive and amiable. The fine craftsmanship and quality show that it was probably made for an aristocratic tomb. It had been buried underground so its surface is calcified and one of its legs is slightly cracked. It has a fitted hard wood stand which was probably added later by a scholar so that it can be placed on the desk for contemplation or for use as a paper weight. Date: Ming dynasty (ca. AD 1500); Length: 3 1/8 inches, Height: 2 1/4 inches, Depth: 1 3/8 inches; Condition: surface calcified, one short crack in a front leg; Provenance: Christie's, London.
