RARE AND FINE MAJIAYAO LARGE PAINTED POTTERY BASIN
An extremely rare Neolithic period large painted basin. Finely painted with geometric patterns with roundels in black all over the inside of the basin, the central roundel with anthropomorphic mask design, further painted with a band of geometric patterns in black on the outside, flat mouthrim, two appliqué handles on both sides, burnished all over except the plain and undecorated flat base. Only a few similar examples are recorded worldwide. Most are in public museums. It comes from the world's most important collection of Neolithic pottery which was formed in the 1960's in Hong Kong and Japan and will soon be exposed in exhibition world tours. Date: Neolithic period (4000BC – 3000BC); Diameter: 38cm; Height: 15cm; Condition: very good but with minor surface and enamel wear.
