Hundred and One Antiques

SOLD

Authentic antique rare 18th-19th century scrimshaw miniature Earth globe mounted in a brass half meridian. The globe, depicting the earth, is with accurate lines of the continents and is with the 17th - 18th century geographical names for parts of the world as "THE GREATE TARTARY" for Siberia and "NEW HOLAND" for Australia. Each ocean has a different name as "WESTERN OCEAN", "THE GREAT SOUTH SEA", "'ETHIOPIC OCEAN", 'INDIAN SEA", with whales engraved on the surface of the ocean. All of these geographical names are from the 17th - 18th century period as for example New Holland is a historic name for Australia; the name was first applied to Australia in 1644 by the Dutch seafarer Abel Tasman and remained in usage for over 150 years. The globe was acquired from an estate sale of a local Canadian collection of antiques. The previous owners had inherited the items from relatives who had collected antiques prior to WWII. I was informed by the owner that the globe previously had a small round wooden base made of ebony but that it is lost. These types of globes were made during the reign of King George III as a decorative display for a gentleman's desk, most of them were made from old damaged Billiard balls and the red marks are probably remains of the red paint with which the ball was dyed.
MEASUREMENTS: Diameter: 5 cm (2 inches).
Due to the fact that the market is flooded by reproductions of antique scrimshaws, we would like to inform our clients that this object is 100% authentic antique, not a reproduction, and will be accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
