Antique Chinese Ching Dynasty, Qianlong period (18th century) gild bronze figure of Guanyin. A goddess shown seated atop a mythical giant monstrous fish "Kun" in "dhyanasana" and holding a vase in her left hand and the right hand raised in a mudra, dressed in loosely draped robes and a cowl covering the high piled hair containing a figure of Buddha seated upon a lotus. This elegant and beautiful figure is finely executed with chiseled precise details.
Guan Yin is the bodhisattva of compassion, revered by Buddhists as the Goddess of Mercy. Her name is short for Guan Shi Yin. Guan means to observe, watch, or monitor; Shi means the world; Yin means sounds, specifically sounds of those who suffer. Thus, Guan Yin is a compassionate being who watches for, and responds to, the people in the world who cry out for help.
MEASUREMENTS: Height: 23cm (9 in) length: 21cm (8 1 / 4 in). Width: 10cm (3 7/8 in).
CONDITION: the figure is in good condition except that the gold gilding is mostly worn out, also in the base is a small round hole and the scratches- file marks, both are later alterations which indicates that at some time the figure was mounted on a later period base.
