A set of Japanese bronze box and trays in the Komai technique; simple and elegant (Komai was originally used to decorate ornamental swords, guns and other militaries). A design is incised and engraved into a bronze base. Gold and silver are hammered into the fine grooves that make up the design. The inlay is both gold and silver and the craftsmanship is of very high standard. All three pieces are signed on the front and on the reverse by the artist in old Japanese writing; therefore my Japanese contacts were not able to read the signature.
CONDITION: in very good condition.
MEASUREMENTS: the box is 4¼ inches (10,8cm) long, 3 ¼ inches (8,2cm) wide and 1 3/8inches (3.5 cm) tall. The trays are 4 inches (10.2cm) long, 3 3/8inches (8.5 cm) wide and 3/8 inches (1cm) high.
This is a great example of Japanese design and composition from the early Meiji period, 1868-1912.
