Authentic antique 19th century Chinese Qing Dynasty Blue silk Dragon
Robe. Hand embroidered with gold metallic threads with nine
five-clawed Principal Celestial Long Dragons amid clouds chasing a
flaming pearl (symbolizing the Buddhist notion of enlightenment) amid
cloud scrolls and scattered with precious Buddhist and Daoist emblems
and auspicious motifs. The neck bands and horseshoe cuffs are
embroidered en suite in metallic threads with smaller dragons. The
lower lishui border embroidered with gold and silver metallic threads
in diagonal bands and rounded billows represents a sea-wave with water
and rocks on the centre symbolizing the earth mountain where the
entire symbols on the Robe represent a schematic diagram of the
universe. Embroidery work required great skill and was a time
consuming process, and mostly was made for the Imperial court
officials. Complete with its original chiseled gilded brass round
buttons and blue silk damask. REFERENCES: (1)"Silks for Thrones and Altars" by Myrna Myers, page 66 and 67. (2) "In The Presence Of The Dragon Throne" by John E.Vollmer (3) "When Silk Was Gold" by James C.Y Watt & Anne Wardwell. Due to the fact that the market is flooded by reproductions of Chinese robes and older theatrical robes which for inexperienced collectors look the same, we would like to inform our clients that this is a 100% authentic antique Chinese Qing Dynasty Robe and not a reproduction, and is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity. Dimensions: Approximately when placed flat: Length: 136 cm (53.5 in), distance from the edge of the cuffs: 212 cm (83.5 in). CONDITION: The robe in general is in good condition considering its age with some loose threads and slight age wear, particularly some tears on the sleeves at the edges where the section of the sleeve is black, there are no holes or applied patches. This Robe comes from an old Canadian collection of Oriental Art, including many Chinese robe’s and related items which we are in the process of photographing and placing for sale for the first time. |
