Antique 19th century Empire Sword
An exceptional antique early 19th century European sword with a gold gilded Empire Hilt. Most likely this is a custom made sword made for the Dragon Senior Officer. DETAILS: A gold gilded brass hilt cast in low relief and a finely chased hilt in pure empire style comprising a pommel formed as a lion's head extended over the back – strap with a lions pelt, an oval dish-guard decorated with scrolls around the border knuckle – guard formed of flattened bar with a scrolled terminal decorated with a band of foliage, a ribbed horn grip bound with gilded twisted wire. A straight single-edged blade with fuller double – edged towards the spear point finely etched over half its length on each side with scrolls and garlands, there is also some writing etched on one side of the blade between the ornamentation, however we are unable to decipher it since it is worn out. The sword comes with its original steel scabbard with brass locket and suspension mounts and silver chape.
CONDITION: The sword is in excellent condition free of rust, the blade and scabbard with the hilt retaining almost all of the original gold gilding .
MEASUREMENTS: Overall length with the scabbard: 104 cm (40 7/8 in), overall length without the scabbard: 98.4 cm (38 3/4 in), length of the blade: 85 cm (33 1/2 in).
