| This is a very rare dragon lustre Boston cup, large size, pattern #Z4829, designed by Daisy Makieg-Jones. It features a mother of pearl interior, with very rare and not often seen rooster in the bottom inside. The outside is mixed blue lustre (pale staining in light green and light blue mottling) with three small gilded dragons. It measures 4 1/16" in diameter and 2 1/4" high. This piece is from circa 1915-1919 and is in mint condition. It is stamped in dark green-Portland Vase symbol, _***_, WEDGWOOD*ENGLAND, handpainted in gold-Z4829, handpainted in red-4. Reference: Fairyland Lustre by Una de Fontaines, p. 86, figure 25d. According to Una de Fontaines this pattern number should have dragons and oriental motifs! So the fact that it has a Rooster on it means it was a mistake or a joke played by the paintress which makes it very rare indeed! Daisy Makieg-Jones also made many bird designs but seldom a Rooster, so this also makes it a very unique piece! | |||||||
