A beautiful semi antique still life of fruit and a basket. Oil on canvas signed lower right P. Themmen Antwerp 1931. Framed in a beautiful antique gold leaf frame the painting is in very good condition the frame has some losses to the edge but still presents nicely.

A beautiful porcelain hair oil box or jar hand painted with a traditional mandarin figural motif on the lid and decorated with butterfly designs on the sides. Dating from the Tong Zhi period 1862-1874. In excellent condition measuring approx. 3.5 x 2.5 inches and comes with a custom fitted silk box.

William Adam Carmel California hidden garden oil painting on canvas board framed in an original arts and crafts period frame. Signed lower right in excellent condition measuring approx. 12 x 16 inches a fine example of this sought after artists work.

Biography

William ADAM 1846 - 1931 William Constable Adam (1846-1931) was born in Tweedmouth, England on August 29, 1846. He studied under Delecluse in Paris, Brydall and Greenlees in Glasgow, and in Buenos Aires before immigrating to Boston in 1893. After moving to California in 1898, he soon settled in Pacific Grove on the Monterey Peninsula. Known as "Professor" Adam, he gave art lessons in his rose-covered cottage at 450 Central Avenue. With a bright and colorful palette of both oil and watercolor, he specialized in views of the Monterey area such as sand dunes, cottage and garden scenes, and the local flora. Adam died in Pacific Grove on October 17, 1931. Member: Boston Art Club; Lowell (MA) Art Club; Glasgow Art Club. Exhibited: Royal Scottish Academy; California State Fairs (medals); Del Monte Art Gallery (Monterey), 1907-12; Berkeley Art Ass'n, 1908; Sorosis Club, 1913; California Artists, Golden Gate Park Museum, 1916; Rabjohn & Morcom Gallery (San Francisco), 1916. Works held: City of Monterey Collection; Santa Cruz City Museum; Silverado Museum (St Helena, CA); Shasta State Historical Monument.

SOLD 

A beautiful Large Staffordshire blue transfer ware well and tree platter made by Clews circa 1825. The platter features a scenic view of travelers in a landscape with ruins and a floral border. Measuring an impressive 21 inches by 16.5 inches the condition is excellent but for a minor chip that was successfully reattached (see picture) . It is amazing that there are virtually no knife marks or signs of use for a piece nearly 200 years old. Overall this is a fine example of this wonderful art form of transfer ware.

A original oil painting of the The Copenhagen (København) was a Danish sailtraining vessel rigged as a five-masted steel auxiliary barque(1921–1929). It was, according to Alan Villiers, the largest and finest sailing vessel in the world at the time it vanished. Oil on canvas signed lower right indistinctly and titled measuring 17 X 25 image framed size approx. 23 X 31. In good antique condition some age cracking. A nice historical decorative painting.

Japanese mixed metal bronze censer with gold silver and brass inlaid details of a rooster and hen with chick and a blossoming flower motif. In excellent condition no damage some slight variations in bronze patina. Measures approximately 7 inches tall or 18 cm. a fine form with tripod feet. This is beautiful example of Japanese Meiji period metal work.

Japanese Banko pottery art tea pot with beautiful enameled designs of cranes. Featuring a complex form with figured bamboo handle and a internal tea strainer impressed mark on bottom. Measuring approx. 6.5 inches tall from bottom to top of handle this piece is in excellent condition.

Banko pottery wares have been produced since the nineteenth century both for the domestic market and for export. Banko ware comes usually as teapots and has charming designs of a peculiar style. Some Banko pottery is unglazed while others can be very colorful and abundantly decorated with sculpture-like high reliefs in very imaginative shapes.
