$8,500.00

A fine original painting of a charging African elephant by highly regarded British wildlife artist Donald Grant. Oil on canvas signed lower right in very fine condition measuring Approx. 32 x 30 inches. Biography, DONALD GRANT Donald Grant was born in North Shields, Northumberland in 1930. His artistic flair was apparent from an early age: he sold his first painting when he was nine to the family doctor. While still a schoolboy he was complimented by the Duke of Gloucester for a large wall mural in a public building and in the same year won a national drawing and design competition. His youthful insistence to get to the source of certain subjects invited problems. When only sixteen years old, he was arrested on Biggin Hill Airfield for stubbornly ignoring the camp adjutant’s refusal to allow him to sketch the aircraft. Uncontrollable enthusiasm compelled him to climb the barbed fence and produce in less than an hour a commendable water colour study of a lone Spitfire standing on a wet tarmac. The reprimand that followed was never forgotten, but the resolution, so necessary in later trips to Africa, was instinctively nurtured. Grant continued to paint at every opportunity while following a varied career. This began with the discipline of a long apprenticeship as a shipbuilding draughtsman, followed by Army service abroad, then periods as a technical illustrator, car stylist and free lance advertising artist. Important commissions for Rolls Royce, B.S.A., and other famous firms were completed during this latter period. In the 1960’s Grant experimented with Hydrogen balloon flying. He found in this experience and atmosphere of serenity which resulted in some superb paintings of balloons in flight, against the majestic splendour of massed clouds. One of his first balloon pictures was immediately accepted by the Royal Academy and sold. Grant’s association with the London Galleries of MacConnal-Mason began at this time and the last few years witnessed a remarkable artistic maturation. Evidence of this is shown in his masterful interpretation of his wildlife subjects. These paintings serve to illustrate some of the finer qualities produced by this distinguished artist. With his intense approach to the subject and the support of a rich background of experiences, he captures on canvas those vital moments of time—be it the magnificent power of a charging elephant or the whispering stealth of a stalking cheetah. Predators like the lion and leopard—scavengers such as the hyena and vulture—their prey, namely the zebra, buffalo, and antelope—all are portrayed by the artist with absolute verve and masterful dexterity.

Claude Lacaze original oil painting on canvas of cubist nudes signed lower left. measuring Approximately 26 x 40 inches in excellent condition.

Biography

Lacaze was a painter who was heavily influenced by Cubism and Post-Cubism, particularly by fellow Bordeaux painters such as André L’Hote. He was born in Angoulême, Charente and studied at the Lycée Montaigne in Bordeaux and it was there, under an inspirational art master, that his desire to be an artist was initiated. He enrolled at L’École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux and studied under André Edouard Marty. At first, his style was decidedly Cubist, showing the influence of Picasso through the aforementioned L’Hote. However he softened the linear effect somewhat as his career developed and this is particularly apparent in his paintings of nudes. He staged his first solo exhibition in Paris in Rue Visconti quite soon after leaving art school. He also exhibited through his career at other locations in Paris, his home city of Bordeaux, Sainte Maxine, Angoulême and Périgueux but he seems not to have had a particularly commercial attitude to his work apparently sometimes not even turning up to the opening nights. Lacaze was appointed Professor of Fine Art at Collège de Puyguillen and also joined the artistic group Maison des Artistes. Exhibitions:  Paris, Galerie Visconiti; Périgueux, N.T.P.; Angoulême, Galerie Tison d’Argence; Bordeaux, Galerie du Loup; Sainte Maxine, Galerie L’Oleil Fauve. The Musée des Beaux Arts de Bordeaux also exhibited his work.

An original oil painting on canvas signed lower right Baxter and dated 1868. A beautiful portrait of two women. Measuring approx. 30 x 40 inches. Biography

Charles Baxter (March 1809 - 10 January 1879) was an English portrait and subject painter, known especially for his portraits of pretty young women. Baxter was born in Little Britain, London in 1809, the son of a book clasp maker, and started his career apprenticed to a bookbinder. However, he gave up this business to commence life as a professional painter, chiefly of miniatures and portraits. In 1834 he made the acquaintance of George Clint, from whom he received some valuable instruction, and in the same year exhibited for the first time at the Royal Academy. In 1839 he joined the Clipstone Street Society, and studied there along with Paul Falconer Poole, William Müller, Edward Duncan (1804-1882), Joseph John Jenkins (1811-1885), Francis William Topham (1808-18), and others, who afterwards became distinguished in the profession. He became a member of the Society of British Artists in 1842, and contributed to its exhibitions many of the poetic and rustic subjects and fancy portraits upon which his reputation chiefly rests. His female heads are especially characterised by refinement of expression and purity of colour.
