| Wonderful example of a distinctly American style in coin flatware. Coffin ends are said to have come into being as a mark of mourning for the death of George Washington. True or not, they first appeared in the last couple of years of the eighteenth century and were made until about 1820. Great size, the spoon measures a full 9 1/4 inches in length, it has a little tip wear and some teething marks in the bowl, otherwise it is in very fine condition. The handle has a very fancy hand engraved script monogram as shown in the photo below. The reverse is stamped with the maker's mark of Samuel Williamson of Philadelphia, with a second possibility of it being by Simon Wedge of Baltimore. Nice piece of Americana. | ||
