| A terrific portrait match safe or vesta case in the form of a miniature book. The cover with a relief portrait of Queen Victoria (1819-1901) and the motto "In Memoriam", the reverse with her regal monogram in fancy script set amongst the complex floral decoration. The case is made from Vulcanite, also known as Gutta Percha, a very hard rubber and the Victorian precursor to bakelite and plastics. The spine has traces of infill with some sparkle left to it, it was done in imitation of a gilt binding. Both the top and bottom can open, striking would have been done on any of the vesta's raised decoration. Nice size and proportion, it measures 2 1/8 inches in length and is 1 1/2 inches in width. A super example of period tobacciana and royal memorabilia, condition is excellent. | ||
