Tairona Ceramic Tray with Bat Adornos
A redware ceramic tray embellished with two smiling bats with wings outstretched. The head and the body of the bat are decorated with incised lines, the back with a diamond-shaped motif. The outer wall of the bowl is incised with squarish scroll designs. The base is painted in buff slip. The piece has been thermoluminescence tested to circa 1400 AD. A very similar example is illustrated in Labbe, Armand J., "Shamans, Gods, and Mythical Beasts: Columbian Gold and Ceramics in Antiquity", Pl. 133. An extraordinary work of art. Dimensions: Length 13 inches x Width 10.5 inches. Very good condition, with cracks repaired - all parts original. Tairona, Santa Marta Colombia 650-1600AD
