Durga Mahishasuramardini, Nepal, ca. 1850 AD

Durga Mahishasuramardini in gilt copper repousse, Nepal, ca. 1850 AD. A beautiful representation of Durga defeating the buffalo-demon Mahisha. Durga standing on an elaborate single lotusbase has 18 hands holding her different attributes of which many is clearly seen, i.e the thunderbolt, the bow, the sword and the drum. The smile on the Durga face is relaxed and mysterious as if the power she uses to fight the battle is only small part of her immense power. Durga holds the hair of Mahisha and her lion is helping. Durga is beautifully decorated with jewelry and skulls in her belt as well as skulls on her shoulder adornment and on the top of the spear, that finishes the battle off. Traces of Puja. The gilding is in places quite intact while it in other places has been completely worn off. Minor damage to the repousse work, but all in an impressive and sizeable piece. H: 37 cm, 15", W: 27 cm, 11". Mounts easily on a wall.
