| Very old and rare sculpture of Maya Devi, mother of Lord Buddha, Nepalese ca. 12th c, black hard stone. Maya Devi has a serene face with arched eye brows and finely carved eyes, nose and mouth and there is a halo behind the head. Maya Devi's left hand is leaning on a white elephant that occurred in her dreams when she was pregnant with Lord Buddha and is a symbol of Royalty in Asia. The statue have heavy traces of Puja and the surface is greasy from burning butter lamps. When worshipped Puja was applied to the face and then smeared down over the statue. Judging from the surface the face has been heavily cleaned and perhaps retouched, if so it was done by an expert since the face remains true to the original dimensions. In any case this is a very rare and old representation of Maya Devi. H: 23 cm | ||||||||||||
