This view of the volcano erupting in the moonlight, depicts the eruption of 22nd October 1822. The Views of "Vesuvius erupting" was painted for visitors who came to Naples on the ‘Grand Tour’ to see the city, the antiquities, the landscape, and, not least, the volcano. Neapolitan school, 19th century. Gouache on paper. Inscribed 'Donnée à Bte Roumieux par son ami Fagès' (lower center edge) and'ERUZIONE. DEL 22 OCT. 1822'(lower right). Measurements: 72cm by 50.5cm.
