SWATOW (Shantou) WARES :
Swatow wares are dated to the middle 16th to early 17th centuries (Transitional period)* and were produced by provincial kiln in Guangdong or Fujian Provinces.
The blue and white and overglaze enameled designs are influenced by Kraak** wares. They usually appear in the form of Kendis, bowls, jarlets, vases, and monk-bowl shaped wares. They are decorated with turtle shell, sacred fungus, coin, lion, and qilin, designs. A silver pheasant perched on a branch and floral designs are also one of the designs on these Swatow wares.
The Swatow wares were heavily potted and elaborately made, as can be seen from the coarse clay, the thick and uneven glaze, and the SAND attached to the footrim or base, ( Typical symbols of Swatow Wares ), which results from the glaze having been wiped off before firing.
