Ghandaran Schist Buddha Head
2nd Century BC-2nd Century AD
Superb grey schist head of Buddha, heavily set features typical of Ghandaran sculpture of the period including finely arched eyebrows, almond shaped half closed eyes, and straight nose. Bears serene smile, typical of Buddha iconography, elongated ear lobes, head of prominently combed hair surmounted by usnisa, a tuft of hair between the eyebrows. A superb piece, epitomising Ghandaran sculpture and Buddha iconography of the period.
