Han Dynasty Equestrian Soldier
206 BC-220 AD Animatedly modelled equestrian soldier seated astride earthenware brown-painted horse; rider wears short blue cross-over tunic belted around the middle with thick white collar and sleeves and black hems with red detailing, above green trousers; attire considered to constitute a vivid graphic index as to what was worn by soldiers during the Han Dynasty. Both arms positioned in front of body and drilled to take hold of reins, facial features clearly depicted surmounted by tightly fitting black cap with red hem. Horse stoutly modelled, standing with head held high, decorative trappings in white and red pigment extend around the horse's neck and rump, red tassles flank either side of neck and hang from the chest, pale green saddle blanket. Moulded and depicted features, wide alert eye, flared nostril and open mouth, twin pointy ears and hogged mane. A superb example, wonderfully modelled with excellent pigment remaining. In excellent condition with a minor repair to back left leg. Measures 30cm (H) x 29cm (W). Cf. Wemun, 1966, no. 3. Pl. 1-4, 1997, no. 10, p.17 The Quest for Eternity. Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 1987, Catalogue. P. 105,fig. 15 Spirit of Han (London 1991)
