We buy many items on a daily basis and wholesale many of them to other dealers, sell at auctions, sell on ebay, etc. What we are selling here is the cream of the crop. We will only sell items here that we would not hesitate to recommend or advise to anyone. Buying antiques and collectibles can be terribly time consuming, frustrating, and a serious financial risk if you are not educated in what you are buying. Yes, you can maybe buy cheaper on ebay or at a local auction (we do) but you will have to run the risk of buying something that has been misrepresented, dammaged, or repaired and in many cases an item with no return priviledges.
The best advise I can give anyone is to: Buy the book before the piece and educate yourself in the best way you can. Education is the key to success. Never, I repeat, Never buy an item without return priviledges. If you can not return an item for any reason, stay away from it. The most common dealer defense you will hear is : "I didn't know",or "That is the way I bought it". Well if your dealer can not stand behind the merchandise they sell, find someone who will. This is the tough one. Try to buy quality rather that quantity. You will do much better in the long run buying a few good pieces than a pile of cheap stuff. If and when the time to sell should come you will easily find buyers for your best items and little or no interest in the lesser ones. And Finally, This will not be accepted well by many but Never consider antiques as a good investment. Unless you are extremley knowledgable or just plain lucky you will not necessarliy make money on everything you buy and try to sell 20 years later. There are so many factors stacked against you including market trends, buying missrepresented merchandise, and dealer buy/sell spreads can be very tough to make up. So in short only buy what you like and only spend money you can afford to lose. Your best defense against any and most of the pitfalls of buying antiques is to know and trust your dealer. Finding a dealer you can trust and confide in can be a time consuming process, but the rewards will be multi-faceted and in many cases be part of a long term relationship. We hope we can be that dealer for you and want the opportunity to show you some good quality antiques and great customer service. |
