Uesugi Kenshin ~ Statue In Armor ~

With this item, we try to recreate Kenshin's divine character. The armor Kenshin's statue wears has been perfected on the base of research on "Mogami-Kabuto", the kind of armor that has been loved by the House of Uesugi. All producing processes were executed in the same way as the original made 400 years ago. Although this item is only 1/4 scale of the original, each piece of "Kozane" (the scale shaped iron leafs of which the armor is composed) is produced so elaborately that you can feel a kind of delicate beauty from the armor. Cardinal of "Odoshi" (lace used to connect the iron leafs) matches so well with the Black of "Kozane", giving a sense of elegance which is appropriate for Kenshin's image. The "Oreeboshinari-Kabuto" (helmet) painted with gold foil is one of its producer, Mr. Miura's best works invested with top class techniques.

Size: 1/4 scale 49cm (H)x 22cm (W)x 20cm (D) Material: Iron, Deer leather, Lacquer, Silk, etc. Accompaniment: Paulownia wooden case, Acrylic case

This is one of the earliest projects by Art Kenshin to date in restoring historical items dated during the Sengoku~Momoyama Period a scaled down model of the original Kabuto worn by Kuroda Nagamasa himself. By using the same techniques, lacquering technology and same processes and materials, Art Kenshin is able to restore the pinnacle of Warring States Period's superior design sense, Wabi-Sabi, by only sticking to genuine materials and discipline just like the artisans of the same period. Thereby, letting the owner of this piece enjoy and appreciate the real thing in its restored form. No doubt, the years of research and trial and error by the contemporary top artisans and craftsmen can only guarantee satisfaction from owning this art piece. We guarantee that generations after will surely enjoy the patination that the gold leaf layers will bring out as time passes by.

This work is a perfect miniature of his excellency, Oda Nobunaga, extremely close to the original image of his presence. Re-creation of fine works was really a hard challenge since there are so few original Nanban Kabuto in good condition existent, and it is the first time that miniature of ancient armors was recreated. Producing of this works was advanced under fully cooperation from Mr. Miura, the authority on ancient armors who had been in charge of restoration of many national treasures in Japan. After 4 years of thorough research and trial and error, we finally managed to recreate the aura and powerful stance of Oda Nobunaga. All the production processes executed and materials that were used are same as those of 400 years ago or to what Oda Nobunaga himself wore.

We have also had a first-class engraver created a statue of Oda Nobunaga, the Daimyo at the Warring State Period, as this Nanban Kabuto’s wearer. There are 2 reasons for this. First, it is hard to image how the armor looks when being put on human’s body if only the armor is displayed. Second, Oda Nobunaga adopted the Western culture actively and Nanban Kabuto was his favorite armor. With the statue of Nobunaga, the feeling when the armor was put on has been represented vividly.
