This article is a sculpture of Indra, one of the Twelve Heavenly Generals. The Heavenly Generals are servant of Medicine Buddha(Yakushi Nyorai), and they protect The Twelve vows of Medicine Buddha, and people who believe in the Buddha.
Indra is also a guardian deity of the year of the horse, and said that his true nature is Ksitigarbha (Zizou Bosatsu).
The article is made from a single block of wood. Using different chisels, the item was carved delicately in detail. Surface of the article is colored with natural dye lightly, and the grain of the wood is not painted over intently to remain feeling of fine material. The gold color made in Kindei(paint including gold) accents the article.

* Katsura tree is one of the largest hardwoods in Asia Since the wood is hard to decay, it had been used as building materials. Color of its surface is white at first, and it would change to beautiful red due to the passage of time.
*Regarding property of wooden sculpture
Almost all of sculpture made from natural wood has possibilities of damaging such as chaps and cracks by changes of the climate. Mr.Ishikawa is well acquainted with the wood materials, he always use only 20-25 years dried wood and avoid wood-core which is easy to crack. But please consider that these factors do not mean the risks are eliminated completely. Please keep the item out of the direct rays of the sun and space with high humidity. And please consider carefully about climate difference between Japan and your homeland country particularly, while we do not accept exchange and returns of item in any case even though it is damaged by the environmental changes.
Biography of Tokihiko Ishikawa
Born in 1958 in Tokyo, Japan.
Studied under Takanori Saito(Member of Nitten, The Japan Fine Arts Exhibition) in 1976.
Worked on the sculpting and restoring in a lot of famous Buddha statues and Temples in Japan.
Opened his own atelier in 1998.
Art Fair Tokyo 2007, Tokyo, Japan
Tamples which he taken part in produce & restoration: Yasukuni-jinja (Tyoko), Kawasaki-daishi (Kawasaki), Enkakuji (Kamakura) etc.
The artist, Tokihiko Ishikawa has experienced restorations of traditional statues for a long time. His solid technique is reflected on not only firm molding but also unique expression of the articles which suits modern life-style.

Chinese Character "Ai"- Kabuto ornament of Naoe Kanetsugu
The pattern of this hanging scroll is originated from Kabuto ornament of Naoe Kanetsugu. Kanetsugu was a resourceful general and defended Uesugi clan after defeat of Sekigahara war with his motto "Justice" which was faith of Uesugi Kenshin.
Chinese letter "Ai" is surrounded by unique cloud pattern on the cloth. A single letter "Ai" means "love" in today, but probably the letter of this ornament was originated from the initial letter of Atago-gongen. Atago-gongen is god of war so carrying with the letter meant the god should protect him.
This item is hand perfected by artisan and the pattern has been cut out using Japanese traditional paper, and dyed skillfully by hand-work.

Naoe Kanetsugu was a resourceful general and great supporter of Uesugi clan. He defended Uesugi clan after defeat of Sekigahara war with his motto "Justice" which was faith of Uesugi Kenshin. His ability was recognized by not only Toyotomi Hideyoshi but also Tokugawa Ieyasu, though Kanetsugu was a mere vassal of Uesugi clan. Moreover, Kanetsugu never obeyed against injustice demand and thrust a challenge at Ieyasu who was reigning over the whole country.
Kanetsugu's Kabuto is famous for its ornament shaping Chinese letter "Ai". A single letter "Ai" means "love" in today, but probably the letter of this ornament was originated from the initial letter of Atago-gongen. Atago-gongen is god of war so carrying with the letter meant the god should protect him.
This hand towel is very uniquely designed with the dynamic letter "Ai" on the cloth with a cloud pattern. In ancient Asia, the cloud was believed to be chariot of gods, and the pattern of the item has powerful line so that it looks as if Chinese dragon coiling itself up.
This item is hand perfected by artisan who has taken over the traditional Edo workmanship. The pattern has been cut out using Japanese traditional paper, and dyed skillfully by hand-work. Coloring of the letter "Ai" is sober gold, image of the original Kabuto.

Chinese Character "Dragon"- An all-out attack banner of Uegugi Army
Uesugi Kenshin, used the banner with Chinese character "Dragon" when he launched all-out attacks on the enemies to raise the morale of his troops for the great power being felt from the character. Handwriting of the letter is full of fight, intentionally cracked to emphasize the power in it. Sumi-black letter on the simple white cloth create plain and powerful atmosphere.

"Crescent" -Symbol of Date Masamune
The origin of the design comes from the Kabuto ornament of Date Masamune "crescent moonh, the only gold ornament of black-lacquered armor. A sharp shape of the ornament symbolizes Date Masamune himself, Shrewd Daimyo who was called as gOne-eyed Dradonh. Gold-brown colored crescent on the black cloth represent not only image Sengoku period, but also refined modernistic feeling.
