This is a spectacular map of the city of Naples with exquisite colouring. It is a woodcut by Sebastian Munster (1489-1552) and was made circa 1550. The map is an original and it has original colouring. It is from German language edition of Munster's Cosmographia Universalis. The map shows a view of the Bay of Naples and shows both ships and a view of everyday life. It is a double page view with an elaborate border. There is print on verso as can be seen in the photographs.
Munster, a highly educated mathematician, geographer and linguist, was one of the most influential mapmakers of the 16th century. |
