Original copper engraving titled, "Alexandri Magni Macedonis Expeditio" by Ortelius circa 1624, published in Amsterdam. The map is beautifully coloured in wash and outline. There is writing on verso.
This decorative map illustrates the conquests of Alexander the Great in the Middle East and Persia. There is a large insert of the oracle of Jupiter Amman, presumably situated in present-day Libya where Alexander went to ask what would be the result of his expedition. The map is embellished with fancy cartouches, ships and a sea monster. The dimensions are as follows: plate size 14" by 18 1/4" and paper size 19 1/4" by 22 1/2". The map is in very good condition. The margins have a small tear and the paper appears dry in a way that is consistent with its age. The borders of the map can be seen in the photos that show the reverse side of the map. They do not show in the photos showing the front side. |
