Beautiful Japanese Wajima lacquer stand with gold maki-e painting on a nashi-ji (pear skin) background. The designs are scrolling vines with stylized chrysanthemums and paulonias, which are the crests of the emperor and empress. The style of sparkling nashiji lacquer work and the theme were popular in the Taisho period (1912-1926) to the beginning of the Showa era, sometime after the return of the throne to the emperor.

The stand was made for a Tokonoma as a base for a flower arrangement, a treasured incense burner, sculpture, etc. A tokonoma is a small alcove in the living room of a house where a scroll was placed at the back and a flower arrangement in the center. It was intended to show the objects at their best. The contents of the tokonoma are carefully chosen and often reflect the seasonal changes. It is a quiet place for reflection and consideration while the viewer contemplates the beauty of the objects themselves and their arrangement. Here is a wonderful stand made to celebrate the change. There is a retailer name with the four digit phone number in Kyoto on the reverse side of the original kiri (paulonia wood) box. New condition with one small scratch at the bottom as shown. The dimensions: 21 1/4 inches, 12" and 4 3/4 inches, box, 22 3/4" x 13" x 6".
