This item is SOLD!

This is a fantastic example of an ancient Chavin conch shell trumpet. Beautifully incised with strange geometric designs, reminiscent of those found on the Nazca Plains. Inlaid with green jade nodes, which, when compared to a star chart, seem to line up with the constellation Orion. Start from the inlays on the far right of the piece. See the three jade inlays toward the suspension holes. Those three align in exactly the same way and proportion as Orion's Belt. And, when comparing the positions of the other inlays to other stars surrounding Orion's Belt, there is a surprising match!!! The ancient Peruvians were very adept at astronomy, and this Conch shell trumpet seems to play out some of the zodiac of the ancient Peruvians with it's fineline engraving and added cinnabar. A very peculiar piece, and fantastic piece with excellent evidence of age and wear from use during ancient times. There is a VERY loud, eerie tone to the trumpet. This piece dates to between 400 and 100 BCE. Measures: 6.25" X 4.5". Condition: perfectly preserved, all original. Works beautifully.
