This is a fantastic example of an ancient Chavin conch shell trumpet. Beautifully incised with strange geometric designs, reminiscent of those found on the Nazca Plains. Inlaid with green jade nodes, which, when compared to a star chart, seem to line up with the constellation Orion. Start from the inlays on the far right of the piece. See the three jade inlays toward the suspension holes. Those three align in exactly the same way and proportion as Orion's Belt. And, when comparing the positions of the other inlays to other stars surrounding Orion's Belt, there is a surprising match!!! The ancient Peruvians were very adept at astronomy, and this Conch shell trumpet seems to play out some of the zodiac of the ancient Peruvians with it's fineline engraving and added cinnabar. A very peculiar piece, and fantastic piece with excellent evidence of age and wear from use during ancient times. There is a VERY loud, eerie tone to the trumpet. This piece dates to between 400 and 100 BCE. Measures: 6.25" X 4.5". Condition: perfectly preserved, all original. Works beautifully.

This is a matched set. These two, ancient copper tupi spoons were used by a Moche (100 BC - 100 AD) coca chewer. They were used as spoons, for cutting small quantities of lime for ingestion with the coca, to even the bitterness of the flavour of the coca, and it's believed that the lime acted as something of a catalyst for the effectiveness of the drug. The coca leaves were (and still are!) chewed primarily by people at altitude. The thin oxygen caused a number of maladies, which are countered by the effects of the coca.
These two peices each measure 2.6" in length. Condition: corroded, with great evidence of age as per the heavy copper oxides. Additionally, the holes in the spades of each piece is intentional. Likely for stringing and wearing around one's neck, so as to keep it handy. Provenance provided to purchaser.
