This is a fantastic piece. It's an ancient Egyptian Naqada II Period Pottery Lug-Handled Jar painted profusely with ibis, Oryx and geometric designs overall. Two perforated lugs protrude from the sides, and the delicate disc rim is decorated with wavy line patterns. Measures: 4.5" (11.4 cm) tall and 7" (17.8 mm) wide across the handles. Condition: one tiny crack to the rim, but it's stable and not needing any repair or restoration. There are a couple of flea-bites on the lugs, as expected from a piece that was used in ancient times for utilitarian purposes. A fantastic piece in perfect condition dating from the earliest horizon of the Egyptian civilization. Provenance provided to purchaser.

Harpocrates derives from the Egyptian falcon-god Horus. He is the Greco-Roman version of Horus-the-child, son of Isis and Osiris. Harpocrates was a protector of children and believed to possess the magical powers of Isis. These figures were often placed in temples as votive offerings. Horus (Egyptian Har), was the Hellenistic god known to Greeks as Harpocrates (in Egyptian Har-pa-khered which meant "Har, the Child”). Harpocrates, represents the first strength of the winter sun, and the image of flowering plant life. Egyptian figures which represent the child Horus as a naked child with his finger to his lips are indicative of the hieroglyphic for "child", and is unrelated to the modern gesture for "silence". Misunderstanding this sign, later Roman poets made Harpocrates the God of secrecy and silence.
This piece is free-standing and measures 6.3" tall.
Condition: Small repair to the base, but otherwise intact, choice and stable.
This piece is consigned from a very reputable collection. Provenance provided to purchaser. Due to consignment, this lot will be shipped at the expense of the purchaser via desired means and at cost.
