PRICE ON REQUEST

This is a spectacular piece in wonderful condition.

It's ancient Egyptian, circa 25th Dynasty (Third Intermediate Period, 800-657 BC).

Standing in a permanent wood base, the piece projects a full 6" from the base. Including the base thickness, the presentation is 7.25" tall.

The depiction is quite unusual. This is a statue depicting a Divine Votaress of Amun. The Divine Votaress of Amun was considered to be a royal female with divine duties, and there are texts which indicate that the king went to great pains to ensure that his daughter would become the Divine Votaress of Amun. It was a highly-revered religious, social and political position in ancient Egypt. The Divine Votaress was considered the First of the Hierodoules of Amun, Head of His Harem, and, as such, she held the position of Legitimate Wife of the God. She is referred to as Wife of the God, and worshipper of the God, or Divine Votaress.

When I first saw this piece, I thought it was possibly Middle Kingdom, due to the unusual proportions. While there is some Alabaster sculpture in the Middle Kingdom, small deities aren't common, so this must be late Third Intermediate Period, as the title of Divine Votaress of Amun did not exist until the New Kingdom, circa the reign of Hatshepsut, who appears to have created the job, thereby cinching her position as next in line to the throne, which seems to have worked quite nicely.

There is a similar piece, albeit much larger, in the Cairo Museum, and she displays the same full figure as this piece.

This piece has a museum provenance. Details provided to purchaser.

This is a lovely, lifelike sculpture in either basalt or greywacke. It's a boldly carved Romano-Egypitan sculpture depicting a lion's head. A sizable carving in a slightly green-tinged dark gray basalt or greywacke. The lion, with somewhat frowning expression and mouth agape. The sculpting material is apparently quite hard, so that the detail is kept simple, yet forceful.

Perhaps once part of a cista or sarcophagus.

Measures 6.25" tall, not considering the height of the permanent plinth. A wonderfully expressive fragment!

From a major NY auction house, and Ex. Arte Primitivo, NYC. Provenance details to purchaser.
