DIJK, JACOBUS / ANDREWS, CAROL (EDITOR) / VAN DIJK, JACOBUS (EDITOR)
ISBN13: 9783805336512 / ISBN10: 3805336519, VERLAG PHILIPP VON ZABERN, Trade Cloth, 280 pages, December 2006
This is a fabulous reference book. Still in plastic, and in pristine condition. This volume publishes more than 200 objects from the private collections of W Arnold Meijer, making them available for the first time to the general public. Accompanying texts by a team of renowned scholars explain in an exemplary manner how ancient Egyptian artists worked stone, wood, glass, bronze, and other materials into unique pieces of art. Other texts tell about the function and use of these objects in everyday life and link their imagery to the mythology and the gods and goddesses of ancient Egypt.

To look upon a mummy is to come face to face with our past. This book presents the story of mummification as a practice worldwide. Mummies have been found on every continent, some deliberately preserved by use of a variety of complex techniques (as with the ancient Egyptians), others accidentally by dry baking heat, intense cold and ice, or by tanning in peat bogs. By examining these preserved humans, we can get profound insights into the lives, health, culture and deaths of individuals and populations long gone. The first edition of this book was acclaimed as a classic. This readable new edition builds on these foundations, investigating the fantastic new findings in South America, Europe and the Far East. It will be a must-have volume for anyone working in paleopathology and a fascinating read for all those interested in anthropology, archaeology, and the history of medicine.
360 pages.
Publisher: Cambridge University Press (Nov 27 1980) Condition: Excellent. Some wear from use, but intact and stable spine.

For the Antiquarian Book Collector -
This is an EXTREMELY rare book created by famous French Egyptologist August Mariette for the 1867 Exposition Universelle (World's Fair).
Entitled - Aperçu de L'histoire Ancienne d'Égypte. Condition of this volume is good. All of the pages are present and accounted for. The spine is cracked inside the cover, but it's stable and this book is readable safely. It belonged to a J.H. Gazali of 13 Rue Mariette Pacha in 1907 as indicated by their many inscriptions on the first pages. Some staining to the pages, as expected. A nice volume and VERY rare. Copies in lesser condition are available elsewhere for between $600 and $800 US.
