Reference Book: Blanc de Chine (Dehua)
An excellent pictorial reference specializing in blanc de chine (dehua) and a must-have book for anybody collecting within this field. The text by Robert Blumenthal is very good as well. We personally find that blanc de chine is probably the biggest area of fraud, abuse, and mistake by unscrupulous and /or unknowledgeable dealers, and as such it is probably the main area where novice collectors get burnt the most. From what we see, we estimate that a staggering 75% of so-called blanc de chine sold over the internet is either fake or mis-attributed in terms of dating....That's quite a sobering statistic and word of caution....We seriously recommend that those interested in these wares buy the 4-5 main blanc de chine books out there, educate your eyes as much as possible, and also handle as many pieces as possible if lucky enough to live in the proximity of a reputable local dealer who carries these types of pieces. And then when finally ready to buy, only buy from a dealer that will give you an unlimited guarantee on your piece so that it can be returned at any time should you find out 3 years later for example, that you were sold a fake.

In our candid opinion, it's not enough of a reason to purchase an antique merely for the sake of a free book, but any client already seriously contemplating a purchase can enjoy this as a free extra. Many collectors, especially beginners, do not make enough effort to acquire good reference books, and are tempted to spend on pieces before they have really learned enough to purchase responsibly and protect themselves. But there is really no better way to educate one's eye than studying the pieces of established collections in published books. However you acquire them, we encourage collectors to amass a good reference library which over time, is essential to building a solid collection and avoiding costly mistakes.
