| Suzuki Seisei (1914-1990) was the first Seto artist to extensively experiment with non-traditional glazes, gaining the nickname “color magician”. Seisei won an award at Nitten in 1954, he then went on to become a judge there, and in many other exhibitions. He was one of the most popular and influential potters in Seto, and he worked very hard on promoting all Seto ceramics. Over the years, he produced a myriad of different designs and styles. This square plate, with a single translucent blue plum blossom decoration on white glaze is the type of ceramic never before produced in Seto and this earned him the nickname “Color Magician”. Piece dates from 1964, 1 1/8” (3cm) tall, 8 7/8” (22.6 cm) wide and 9” (22.8 cm) long. It is enclosed in original signed box with artist’s biography (in Japanese). His work is in all of the major museums and private collections in Japan. For more information, see Finest Ceramics in Seto, Seto City Museum, 2005. | ||
