Clemens Friedell worked on Gorham's prestigious MartelÚ line, and moved to California where he catered to the carriage trade. The stamped number "1" in the mark indicates that this was probably an early piece. 2-3/4" L and 5/8" H. Heinrich A. Sterling Blanchard server, delicate, with rounded trowel-shaped blade, and slender spreading handle that ends with a detail that has two small concave raised symmetrical sides. Blanchard was first president of the Arts and Crafts Society of Southern California, and one of the few medalists of the Boston Society of Arts and Crafts. He was known as the "silversmith to the [movie] stars." 8-5/16" L and 1-3/4" W.
