| Excellent footed 1928 Britannia silver tray by London's Crichton and Co. Britannia silver is purer than sterling (95.84% vs. 92.5%), and is marked with a "lion's head erased" rather than sterling's leopard's head, and a seated woman figure commonly referred to as Britannia rather than sterling's lion passant [see online photograph #4]. The tray has a raised scalloped edge and four curving feet, and is a nice size for holding small treats. It measures 7-1/16" wide corner-to-corner and 13/16" H. Sincere thanks to silver expert Patrick Street on smpub-dot-com, for letting us know that LAC stands for "Lionel Alfred Crichton who established a business as dealers in antique silver and retail silversmiths in Kensington, London. The mark was first entered in 1895 and subsequent marks similar in design entered until 1912. The firm remained in business until closing in the 1950s." Mr. Street also notes that "it is unusual to find a Britannia standard piece from such a modern era. Ian Pickford in his Pocket Edition of Jackson's Hallmarks states at p. 14 that 'little Britannia standard will be found between about 1735 and the end of the 19C.' The fact that Crichton were retailers of usually fine reproductions of early pieces might explain why the Britannia standard was used on this piece." | ||
