This beautiful yunomi (tea cup) is the work of Suzuki Tomio who is, in my opinion, one of the best Shino potters in Japan. In spite of the difficulty of making Shino ware, which has a very high loss rate, he has proven to be one of its masters. Born in Kyoto in 1948, Suzuki Tomio established his first kiln in the southern suburbs of Kyoto, in the Yawata district, in 1988 and since 1989 specializes only in Shino-yaki. He has held expositions at major venues in Japan and has been the recipient ...click for details

Tokoname-yaki (Tokoname ware) is a pottery tradition that originated more than 900 years ago in the Sanage province (current Aichi prefecture). It is one of the oldest in Japan and is considered one of Japan’s 6 old kilns (Rokkoyo). The high-fired ceramic is especially known for its Kyusu (small tea pot). This vase was made by Yamada Kenkichi, born in 1923 in a famous family of potters; his brother Yamada Jozan was designated Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure) o ...click for details

A chawan is like a person. It has its own character and given time its own stories to tell, if one would listen. Most of its spirit comes directly from its maker, therefore looking at the creation one can get a sense of what kind of person the creator is, even without having met her or him. This bowl radiates beauty in a majestic way while remaining humble and honest with its purpose. Such a remarkable balance can only be found in the work of a Master. The chawan is enveloped by a serene au ...click for details

The character for “joy” (yorokobi), which stands out on this bowl, seems to have been magically kept free of the enveloping black glaze, as a demonstration of its power, born from the light brown clay. That clay has been the source of inspiration for generations of Shigaraki master craftsmen. Shigaraki ware has more than a thousand year old history and it is considered one of the six original pottery traditions in Japan (Rokkoyo). In 742 the Emperor Shoumu had a palace built in his new capita ...click for details

Shigaraki ware has more than a thousand year old history and it is considered one of the six original pottery traditions in Japan (Rokkoyo). In 742 the Emperor Shoumu had a palace built in his new capital, Shigaraki. The roof tiles of that palace were made locally with Shigaraki clay. The pottery center developed from then on making wares for the everyday life of farmers and common folks. The natural character of Shigaraki-yaki with its unglazed ceramics, or covered with ash glaze, attracted ...click for details
