This remarkable chawan (tea bowl) is yet another splendid example of the high level of craftsmanship of one of Kyoto’s best known raku-yaki potters, Sasaki Shoraku III, born in 1944. The fiery red glaze seems almost incandescent, as if the bowl had just been taken out of the kiln. Its dynamic shape, molded by the potter’s hands (and not on a wheel), makes it a very sensuous and energetic vessel.
