This splendid chawan is part of a wonderful collection of tea bowls acquired over many years by a private Japanese collector.
Shin San Hon is a Korean potter, born in 1947. He started learning pottery in high school and was recognized early on, winning at an Art Exhibition of the Korean Chamber of Commerce, at the age of 21. The open scars of this splendid tea bowl expose a coarse clay that reveals its rustic origins. Ido chawan used to be made as rice bowls for peasants, in Korea, centuries ago. They later gained the admiration of Japanese tea ceremony masters, who lauded their simple beauty.
