Here is a very elegant shuhai, made by one of the best contemporary Shino potters: Suzuki Tomio. A shuhai is a cup used to drink alcohol, usually sake, but the size of this particular piece makes it a perfect beer drinking vessel, or any other beverage, for that matter. The cup was made in the Kagayo style of Shino pottery, a genre created by Suzuki Tomio, who is famous for his Yohenkin-shino vessels, which have a spectacular soft golden caramel glaze and rich nacreous effects. This splendid guinomi (sake cup) is one of the new pieces fired by Ema Hiroshi in the spring of this year (2009). Looking at this new series of works, it seems clear the potter has tamed Someya pottery; an orphan tradition whose secrets of production he had to unearth and master alone. Someya-yaki (Someya ware) is born again, through the dedication of the artist, and reveals itself to be one of the most authentic pottery styles; without pretension, yet solid in its rusticness, true to the esth ...click for details

This remarkable guinomi (sake cup) was made by Suzuki Goro, who has recently revisited the hai-shino (ash shino) genre of pottery. The warm medium is an adequate playfield for the artist’s motifs and idyllic sceneries, which invite the touch and use. Suzuki Goro is a potter who goes beyond that usual appellation. He has developed a unique way of expressing himself through ceramics, basing his work on traditional styles from the Mino tradition: Shino, Oribe, Ki-Seto (yellow Seto), Setoguro (b ...click for details
