This large hanaire (vase) was made by Unokawa Kazumasa. It is a more personal work from the Tenmoku master craftsman. The mineral and organic qualities of the vase give it a powerful aura. In ancient Japan, people thought every thing had a spirit and was respected as such. This piece, which could also have been found along the old path to a sacred shrine, seems to possess a holy life of its own, and here again, we have evidence of the cosmic link between this potter and his work.

This fantastic piece looks like a flower button that has just opened with a burst of energy; without doubt the creative vitality of its maker: Suzuki Goro. The bud looking vessel is finely adapted for its function as a vase, and the Yashichida style of pottery, which is an ideal medium for the potter, lends its colors and motifs well to the work. Yashichida is a decorative style of Oribe ceramic which was popular during the Momoyama period (1573-1603) and the beginning of the Edo period (1603 ...click for details

This splendid hanaire (vase) is part of a series of pieces fired by Ema Hiroshi in the spring of 2007, using Honjo clay. This splendid hanaire is part of a series of four vases which I picked up at Unokawa Kazumasa’s kiln located near the historic city of Nara, Japan. Unokawa Kazumasa is a master potter, able to make one of the most orthodox and technically challenging wares: tenmoku chawan. At the same time he keeps a great sense of artistic balance by making pieces, such as this one, in which his creativity runs free and is in total harmony with his spirit. Born in Nara in 1952, Unokawa Kazumasa never had a ...click for details

This remarkable vase has a spectacular appearance and seems to emulate unscalable cliffs of epic design. Each one of its faces offers a different view. One can get lost in its contemplation, as the path to its full appreciation remains hidden, but it keeps on inviting spectators. This majestic piece is an allegory to life. It is an ideal accessory for a tea ceremony room, as the variety of its faces will harmoniously fit every season of the year.
The vase was made by Suzuki Tomio, who is, ...click for details
