Here is another fantastic chawan (tea bowl) by Unokawa Kazumasa. This spectacular vessel is gem from space, a kind of meteorite which contains the entire universe, true to the nature of the chalice of the Japanese tea ceremony as a microcosm; it is of today yet timeless.
These days, Unokawa Kazumasa makes his chawan (tea bowls) using only his hands; without a potter’s wheel. This approach allows him to produce vesse ...click for details

This attractive chawan (tea bowl) was made by one of Japan’s best known contemporary potters: Koie Ryoji. As with many works by the famous artist, this piece’s dynamism conveys pure energy and raw strength. Through its white glaze, rough texture and primitive markings, one gets the sense of the primary force that has shaped it through the craftsman’s lucid spirit. The authenticity and honesty of this potter’s works, as well as the feeling of freedom they radiate, have given him the recognitio ...click for details

This remarkable chawan (tea bowl) was made by a potter named Udagawa Hijitani, born in 1940. The vessel seems sugar coated in a silky immaculate robe that gives it a sweet and generous character, and in the hand, its smoothness enchants. Yet, at the kodai (foot) the apparent clay shows its firmness and the strength of its base. Would this bowl be a bride, it could bear a dynasty.

This is a very attractive mizusashi (water jar). Its auburn iron tones make it look like a rusty medieval armor, as the relief could mimic battle blows. In a chashitsu (tea room), its use might echo the phantomatic presence of feudal warriors, adepts of the tea ceremony, who once sought the sanctity of those spaces to share tea, even with their enemies.
The jar was made by a potter named Toraku in a little known st ...click for details

This very charming chawan (tea bowl) was made by a Hagi potter named Tamamura Shogetsu. The bowl’s shape is reminiscent of the hemispherical vessels created by Raku-yaki genius Hon’ami Koetsu(1558-1637). The very feminine form is soothing to the touch and the famed white silky Hagi glaze dresses the chalice in the most sensuous way. This bowl will certainly bring a peaceful mood to its user.

This fantastic chawan (tea bowl) was made by Suzuki Tomio, a well known contemporary Shino potter. It is a very strong piece, from the mouth to its kodai (foot), and probably one of his masterpieces. The vessel sits on a solid base, which defines the powerful balance of the whole body, bright and still radiating the fire that made it in spirit and flames. In it, it seems the universe is still being born. Used as it certainly should, this chalice will inspire and reenergize. ...click for details
