The open scars of this splendid tea bowl expose a coarse clay that reveals its rustic origins. Ido chawan used to be made as rice bowls for peasants, in Korea, centuries ago. They later gained the admiration of Japanese tea ceremony masters, who lauded their simple beauty. This particular piece is very masculine in design and in character, as its unhealed wounds, proudly displayed, seem to bear witness to a turbulent life.
