Seiji Chawan by Choshun Takashi IX
This beautiful tea bowl is a Seiji ware (celadon), one of the most difficult pottery to make. It was made in Imari, Saga prefecture, in the North of the Japanese island of Kyushu, by Choshun Takashi, a ninth generation potter from that region. He, his father and his brother searched for many years, looking at 10,000 pieces, to find the secret of the technique of the making of Nabeshima blue porcelain, a 300 year old tradition (Nabeshima was the ancient name of the region as well as its Lord’s). The only place where the clay for Nabeshima seiji can be found is on the mountain of Okawauchiyama in Imari. Choshun, who is always looking for new ways to broaden the world of seiji, by using different shades and technique of lacquer, has been selected several times at the prestigious expositions of the Japanese Ceramic Association and the Japanese Craft Association, to which he became a member in 1982. He always chooses natural ingredients, so its pieces have a very soft brightness. Choshun makes a point to make pieces one at a time, with the satisfaction of the user in mind. He is a traditional craftsman as much as an artist. The bowl is in perfect condition. It comes with its signed attested box. Dimensions: 12.5 cm x 7 cm (5 in x 2.8 in), Weight 370g (13 oz) More pictures available on demand.
