Karatsu Guinomi by Hosakawa Morihiro
This guinomi (sake cup) is the work of Hosokawa Morihiro (born in 1938), former Prime Minister of Japan. Hosokawa retired from the political life in 1994 and entered the world of pottery. He became the apprentice of Tsujimura Shiro, a potter specialized in Ido chawan (Ido tea bowl), and studied with him for a year and a half in Nara, close to Kyoto. Hosokawa specializes in the making of wares for the tea ceremony and especially raku-yaki chawan with a preference for the classic mat-textured red and black bowls. He has also shown great talent and mastery with other styles of pottery like Shino, Karatsu and Ido, to name a few. This particular cup is a karatsu guinomi. Karatsu-yaki were originally made by Korean potters who founded kilns on the Japanese island of Kyushu (current Saga prefecture) in the 15th and 16th century. It is known for its underglaze iron paintings, like in this guinomi (painted circle). The cup, which was exposed at Hosokawa Tokyo exhibition in May 2005, is in perfect condition. It is signed and comes with its signed box. Dimensions: 6 cm x 7 cm (2.4 in x 2.8 in), Weight 120 g (4.2 oz) More pictures available on demand.
