Blue Raku Chawan by Suzuki Goro
This fabulous chawan (tea bowl) is part of a series of 20 Raku bowls made by Suzuki Goro in 2006. It was a first (and maybe a last) for the potter who is better known for his Mino wares. Suzuki Goro is a potter’s wheel prodigy who has attained the highest levels of knowledge of his crafts. But recently, he sometimes put the wheel aside and lends his hands more creative freedom to feel and shape his work. As Raku wares are hand formed, they are an ideal new way of expression for the prolific artist. This particular chawan is one of the jewels of that experiment; these tones have never been seen on a Raku bowl before, and it looks as though Monet himself painted the Normandy sky blue and Cezanne the olive green. The kodai (foot) is a magnificent work in itself. In the microcosmic space, the heavens seem to give birth to the earth in a spectacular spiraling stroke. Without a doubt, this piece is one of Suzuki Goro’s most divine.

Suzuki Goro is a potter who goes beyond that usual appellation. He has developed a unique way of expressing himself through ceramics, basing his work on traditional styles from the Mino tradition: Shino, Oribe, Ki-Seto (yellow Seto), Setoguro (black Seto) and the Karatsu tradition. His works, which have a strong sense of individualism, include tea bowls with colorful painted cars and life size chairs, but he is also a master of more orthodox pieces. In 2002, Suzuki Goro received the very prestigious Japan Ceramic Society Prize.

The bowl is signed, in perfect condition and comes with a signed box. Dimensions: 10 x 14.5 cm (4 x 5.8 in)
