| This attractive chawan (tea bowl) was made by a potter named Karakida Matazo, born in 1926. The soft shape and elegant sky-blue robe form a very refined vessel; certainly very appropriate for a tea ceremony during the summer, when the bowl’s soothing shade can refresh the body and the mind. After his studies at the prestigious Tokyo University of the Arts, Karakida Matazo taught in a junior high school. He started studying pottery in 1952 and established his first kiln in the city of Nagano, in 1963. In 1967, Karakida Matazo studied with the great Okabe Mineo (1919-1990) and built a nobori-gama (climbing kiln) in Nagano, in 1972. The potter became a member of the influential Japan Traditional Art Crafts Association in 1980 and has exposed in renowned venues such as the Mitsukoshi Department store in Nihonbashi, Tokyo. The chawan is signed and in perfect condition. It will be shipped in a signed wooden box. Dimensions: 12.5 x 8 cm (5 x 3.2 in); weight 265g (9.3 oz) More pictures available on demand Please make sure you read my Sales Policy Page and kindly inquire if you have any question.
