Here is a very elegant shuhai, made by one of the best contemporary Shino potters: Suzuki Tomio. A shuhai is a cup used to drink alcohol, usually sake, but the size of this particular piece makes it a perfect beer drinking vessel, or any other beverage, for that matter. The cup was made in the Kagayo style of Shino pottery, a genre created by Suzuki Tomio, who is famous for his Yohenkin-shino vessels, which have a spectacular soft golden caramel glaze and rich nacreous effects. This shuhai is a marriage between that style and the immaculate white Shino glaze; an exquisite hybrid.
Suzuki Tomio is one of the best Shino potters in Japan. In spite of the difficulty of making Shino ware, which has a very high loss rate, he has proven to be one of its masters. Born in Kyoto in 1948, Suzuki Tomio established his first kiln in the southern suburbs of Kyoto, in the Yawata district, in 1988 and since 1989 specializes only in Shino-yaki. He has held expositions at major venues in Japan and has been the recipient of several awards. He is also featured in books which recognize contemporary Japanese ceramists. The cup is signed and in perfect condition. It will be shipped in a signed box.
