9.5” Height x 1” Width x 1.5” Depth (2” square base) Carved out of ironwood, this spoon handle from the island of Sumba has a slightly shining reddish-brown patina. The handle is at least 40 years old. The figure features a smiling face and a symmetrical body in the traditional Sumbanese posture. The stand was custom designed to fit the contours of the handle.

5.25” Height x 1.125” Width x 1” Dept. This fetish, carved from horn, is from Borneo and at least 70 years old. Dayak tribes carved these figures to hold magical or spiritual powers. This figure has a heart-shaped face and sits in the traditional knees-up crouching pose. The cylindrical body has a dark dense high sheen patina.

This ironwood component of a Sumbanese weaving tool is estimated to be 70 years old. The heart-shaped round face has an adorable childlike expression. The piece has a dark patina with rich red tones with four holes; two at the arms and 2 through the midsection. The steel custom-made base is included.

9.75”Length x 2.25” Width x 9.625” Height This teakwood four-legged horse or deer-like figure is from Java, Indonesia and at least 70 years old. The graying patina has an underlying black lacquer that was stipple painted in white, yellow, brown, and gray-purple. There are touches of red in the joints. The whimsical elongated head has detailed carved eyes, nose, and mouth. The feet have distinct hooves and spur-like protrusions. The hand carved 7 (seven) loosely fitted sections are all original; however the ears and tail are missing (if they ever existed). There is minor cracking on back of the head and the hindquarters, plus, a 2 mm chip out of the rear right hoof. Otherwise, excellent condition.

This carved Burmese teakwood elephant was used to store medicinal herbs and is at least 80 years old. The well-worn red and black lacquer is classic to Burmese artistry. The elephant’s “hidden” storage compartment lacks a lid. Elephants are the most revered animals in Southeast Asian culture. So rare and sacred are these creatures that staffs of people or volunteers cater to its every (assumed) desire.

3.375” Height x 3.125” Width x 1.5” Depth This miniature book unfolds like an accordion and has a wood cover with a braided leather band holding it together. This medicine man’s potion book is traditionally called a pustaha or a (datu) and consists of three main divisions of knowledge; the art of preserving life, the art of destroying life, and the art of fortune-telling. The book tells of the datu’s magic formulas (tabas), oracles, recipes for medicines, and instructions for performing rituals and producing magic cures. This unusual artifact is over 70 years old, has great energy and is in excellent shape. It is a single piece with no damage whatsoever. It and written in traditional Batak calligraphy and features several small pictures or iconographs on several pages.
