A large, carved wood ( cypress? ) image depicting the “Four Arms seated Mahakala”, one of the great, fierce protector and guardian of the Dharma. He wear a high crown, earrings, a long garland of severed heads and a tiger skin around his waist and seats on the corps. The two main hands holding a Vaira and a skull bowl; the second pair of hands holding a sword (of wisdom) and a Khatvanga staff (both missing). Two brushes for the scholar’s table made of hongmu: one with a short, heavy handle, one with a long, thin handle. China, Qing, early to mid-19th cent. L cm 16,5 cm (short), L 31 cm (long). A small and very delicate bamboo incense container (kogo) for tea ceremony. Decorated on the lid with oysters, snails and coral in high relief gold. Inside with black lacquer. Fitted pouch of purple, crepe silk. Comes with a small kiri box (not original). Japan, Meiji, 19th century. D. 3,5 cm. Condition: Perfect (pouch with 2 minor holes due to age).

An unusual and rare type of wood, probably a hard part of plantain or palm tree; it has the same bamboo kind of grain, but it is lighter than bamboo. It is carved in the shape of a branch with large leaves and fruits. Remain of old colour and lacquer. Good patina. 19th cent. L. 20 cm; H. 10 cm; W. 10 cm.

A interesting shunga hand-scroll with 4 scenes in bright colors on silk by a high-class painter. The motives depict persons, a gentleman with western style suit and high hat, a sumo wrestler, a soldier and a factory worker, engaged in various, intimate situations. The painting is from the Meiji period, ca. 1890. Total length: 160 cm. Scenes: H. 16 cm x 25 cm. Scroll ends in glas. CONDITION: The paintings very good and unsoiled. The scroll itself with many creases due to age.

A rare and highly attractive miniature rock in fantastic shape made of iron on which are three small crabs, 1 bigger and 2 smaller, of painted bronze. Unsigned. Early Taisho period, ca. 1915. H 5 cm, L 13,5 cm. Condition: good, but with some wear to the crabs.
